我们日常可能会用到的表达就是那么多了。

★ the most important 最重要的，最重大的

this was possibly the most important scientific discovery of the 20th ce

ntury.

这也许是20世纪最重大的一项科学发现。

if there is a fire, the most important thing is to get all the students out of the building immediately.

如果发生火灾，最首要的事情是立刻把所有的学生都撤出大楼。

★ priority 首要的事情

first, let's decide what our priorities are.

我们先来决定哪些是首要的事。

my main priority is get through all my exams.

我的首要大事是通过所有 的考试。

★ first/top/number one priority

safety always been our number one priority.

安全始终是我们的第一要事。

the government's refusal to see that the protection of the environment must be our first priority today is a great tragedy.

环境保护乃我们当今社会的当务之急，但政府却对此视而不见，实乃一大悲剧。

★ give priority to sth (=decide that something is very important, and deal with it urgently) 将某事列作优先处理的事

the president promised to give priority to reducing unemployment.

总统许诺要把减少失业作为优先处理事项。

the government should give top priority to rebuilding the inner cities.

政府应该优先重建城内旧中心区.

★ be at the top of the agenda 排在议事日程的首位〔尤指政府或公司〕

getting inflation down is at the top of the agenda.

降低通货膨胀率这一问题排在议事议事日程的首位。

the government were reluctant to put equal pay for women anywhere near the top of the agenda.

政府不肯重视妇女同工同酬的问题。

for the government, education is now at the top of the agenda (= most important).

对政府来说,现在教育是当务之急。

★ paramount 最重要的，至高无上的

the patients' wishes and needs are paramount and they must always come before our own.

病人们的愿望与需求是最重要的，必须始终优先考虑然后才考虑我们自己。

和平解决危机的迫切性

★ of paramount importance

public safety and security are matters of paramount importance.

公众安全是最重要的事情。

this matter is of paramount importance.
